Starting Your Day Out Right

before-bed

My kitchen, ready for a busy day!

As a work-at-home mom since our first daughter was born, I’ve learned the value of getting ready for especially busy days before the day starts. Waking up to a clean house and not having to worry about finding clothes for everyone, deciding what we’ll eat or keeping the girls entertained helps me balance what can sometimes be an extremely hectic schedule.

Let me start by saying that I don’t go this far on an everyday basis. On a normal night, I simply clean up before bed and then worry about breakfast, clothes and activities the next day. Waking up to a clean, straight house makes the day go smoother, no matter what mood the girls are in or what we have to do. And even better, not having to worry about cleaning up from dinner the night before means we have time to head outside on a beautiful morning or dance around the family room as we listen to a CD without the guilt of a list of chores that need to be done.

On the other hand, on days when I know that I have little wiggle room or that we’re leaving the house early for an appointment, I do my best to get as much ready the night before as possible. Yes, I even pull the bags of cereal out of the pantry and set them on the counter with bowls and spoons because sometimes every minute counts and having one less thing to worry about is a sanity saver.

Do you “shine your sink” before bed each night, a la The Fly Lady? Have you noticed a difference between days when you wake up to a clean, straight house and days when you wake up to a pile of dishes, toys and clutter?

Oh my yes! I notice a HUGE difference when I wake up to a clean house and when I get ready the night before (keys by the diaper bag, diaper bag stocked, clothes laid out…) What I have to battle is finding the motivation the night before, knowing how much it will help me the next morning!

I wake up earlier than everyone else so that I can have at least an half hour of alone time – if the kitchen isn’t cleaned up, I can’t enjoy that time in peace. Dishes in the sink in the morning is my biggest pet peeve! And I’ve gotta tell you, FlyLady is to blame :) She’s so right about a shiny sink.

I wrote an entire article about this on Sunday. Yes, I shine the sink. I also follow a morning and evening routine. I think the evening routine is key for having a smooth morning!

I totally agree – it’s so much easier to start your day when you’ve set up for it the night before.

I’ve been fluttering with Flylady for over a year now, and I still haven’t done that much, but my before-bed routine is done religiously every night, and it really *does* make a difference in the mornings, whether we have to leave the house early or not!

Sorry for the double post, just wanted to share another thing I try to make sure to get done every day. I make sure the place is looking pretty much company-ready before we leave the house, in case I bump into a friend to invite back for a coffee. (By company ready I mean toys picked up and the place hoovered up – not totally pristine and spotless! lol).

It’s nice to come back from taking my son to his afternoon nursery and seeing that I really can use that time to relax instead of cleaning/tidying.

I definitely find that when I spend a few extra minutes at night pulling things together I feel much more relaxed in the morning.

I totally notice a difference when “shine the sink” and more. The problem is that I don’t always do it. I usually just want to veg as soon as the kids are in bed and then it’s so hard to talk myself into getting back into gear. My hubby and I have talked abt doing a house-rescue right after getting down, but that’s as far as we’ve gotten. Thanks for the motivation!

(Is this your kitchen? LOVE the countertops!)

Mandi, great post! I love the labeled photo!

I’ve just started doing this in earnest. My daughter was born just over three months ago, and I’m in my third week back at work full time. Before I came back to work, I decided what my morning routine would look like, as well as what I wanted my husband’s “job” to be each morning. Shining the sink each night is a BIG part of the evening routine that makes the morning routine run smoothly.

I used to be really, um, particular about how clean my house was at night, so I would not be so frazzled in the morning. A husband, 2 kids, and a dog later I am usually exhausted by 7 p.m. and all I want to do is go to bed!

I am curious about the dishwasher, do you wash your dishes, then open the door to let them air dry?

Oh, I know what you mean, Denise. I actually do most of it while dinner is cooking and while the girls are finishing up their dinner because once they’re in bed (usually at 7:30), I am DONE. D-O-N-E, DONE! :P

I actually wash my dishes by hand for the most part. We turn to the dishwasher the second things get really busy or hectic, but I find it kind of cathartic and refreshing to just stand there and mindlessly wash them for 15 or 20 minutes a day! I’m not sure how much difference it really makes on our electric bill, but I like to pretend it makes one. LOL!

Yep, I think this is the same battle we all face. I always regret it when I don’t do it, but sometimes I just can’t find the motivation no matter how hard I try!

I love a shiny sink and a clean kitchen in general. It’s a constant battle, but we’re getting better at it. With the kids home for summer, I go into quick boogie mode when I get home from work to get things back to normal.

My little guy can be both an early riser (5 am a few days last week) *and* a night owl (10 pm, fairly regularly). Plus, he’ll wake up if you make any loud noise (our flat is rather small). I love having the dishes all cleaned up before the next day, and I agree it makes a huge difference! As it is, the first thing I do in the morning is put all the dishes in the drainer away (no, we don’t have a dishwasher).

I would love it, though, if I were able to keep the floors mopped and vacuumed – but I can’t figure out what to do with the little guy while I’m doing that stuff! And, no, he doesn’t always nap, either!

How old is your little one? I would probably try a sling (using a Mei Tai, you could carry him piggy back style) or playpen time to have time to vacuum and mop!

I’m woken up in the morning by my 4yr old and 2yr old so I get zero time in the morning to think before being “on duty.” I definitely think it makes a world of difference if the place is tidy. I try to have clean dishes, a clean counter, a clean, clear breakfast table, and a picked up living room. My kids go to daycare two days a week and I’ve found that transition goes MUCH smoother when I have their bag and lunch packed the night before.

    Thanks for the post!

Absolutely!! I do my best to put away all clean dishes, have the coffee ready to go (all I have to do is push start)…I love coming down to a clean kitchen with clear surfaces. It’s amazing at the difference it makes in my day!! (and it only takes a few minutes to do it before bed).

I don’t think there is any other habit I have found that will make or break my day than getting the kitchen and living room put together the night before. If I come down the stairs to dishes, piles of paper and toys in the morning, I am automatically behind on my day. It only takes a few minutes at night to do the dishes and pick up the clutter – remember my laundry basket? :) I have blogged on this subject many times – mostly after I fail to do it!

O yes!! I feel this not only about the kitchen but all the rooms in the house. If my bedroom isn’t tidy, going to bed in it just feels blech and I cannot prepare food or coffee in an unkempt kitchen in the morning. Luckily I have my teen daughter who (enforced) does the dishes at night so that is a help but no matter what, I must have tidy counters and sink in the the morning if I want to get everything going well. I’ve experimented with this to the extent that I laze off over weekends because we get up later and so I apparently have extra time to tidy before I make coffee etc and, though it doesn’t change anything timewise for me, it definitely affects my mood because I feel less in control of things.
