Question of the Day: Biggest Time Wasters?

Time Wasters

source: liquidnight

We all have them, things that suck away little bits of our time here or there. I don’t mean hobbies, which are things you do because you love them (even if you do end up getting lost in them and spending more time than you planned!). Instead, I mean the things that draw you in and then leave you wondering why you spent so much time on them anyway. They usually leave you feeling drained rather than energized and frustrated at the time you’ve wasted.

Today I want to know…

What are your time wasters?

Is it the internet? Blog hopping? Facebook?

Is it an iPhone app? Video game?

Is it day-time TV?

Browsing the aisles of your local big box store?

Something else?

Can’t wait to read your comments (and hoping I’m not the only one who finds myself wasting time on some of those things)!

Let’s see. For me, it’s definitely blog hopping and Facebook. The nosy part of me loves to read other people’s stories, see their cute family pictures and figure out the back story to their current posts!

Also, I definitely get caught up browsing at stores, even when I’m just running in to pick up something really quick and even though I rarely buy anything.

    You?

For me it’s the Internet in general. Some of the things I use it for are productive and some are just a waste of my time. When I know I need to get things done I do my best to focus on what I’m doing and make sure that my surfing is more intentional. I keep ‘chats’ offline and don’t even open something that’s going to pull me away. Sometimes though … I just have to close the computer.

My time waster is the internet in general! My mind runs 24/7 and I can always think of SOMETHING I NEED to research or find out about. My phone isn’t working for the internet on my pc now so I am FORCED to only use it when my husband is home. (I dropped my phone in the ocean….lol….not in a hurry to buy a new one!) Now I am finding myself actually getting things done and making sure my searching is to the point! Which means….must get off of blog! LOL…thanks for all the great advice!! Love your blog!

Definitely NOT Facebook. I understand why so many use it but I don’t understand why so many stay so long on it. But I have to admit, my biggest time waster is blog hopping. There is so much wonderful information to absorb. Useful too.

The internet – period. I’ll start with something good (planning meals on plan to eat) and then I’ll check email, read my blogs, play with some pictures to post, find a store to surf, play on facebook, read some blogs, and next thing I know, an hour has passed and I still hadn’t planned my meals like I started to…

For me it’s my iPhone and Internet in general- It’s a bad habit to be sitting somewhere for just a little while and notice that I pick up my phone to check facebook/twitter even though I just checked it a minute ago (or look at the local 911 dispatch website to see what’s going on).

It’s definitely blog-hopping. I will not start a Facebook account or Twitter because I know I’ll be on here all day long. Not enough discipline to stop until I’ve read every new post of my many blog subscriptions. It’s an illness, I think. Help!

Without a doubt, blogs & facebook are my biggest time wasters. I have thought about deactivating my facebook account several times…but then think about ‘all the news’ I’ll miss out on. In defense of blogs, I think I learn about some great ideas from some of them out there!

Reading twitter and surfing around on the internet. I’ve started putting the laptop away much more often throughout the day and I am getting a lot more done. I love the internet, but I really do not NEED to check twitter 246 times each day.

Definitely the internet, whether it’s my laptop or Blackberry. I am seriously going to start putting myself on a schedule because it’s way to easy to get lost in surfing the web, checking email, RSS, Twitter, Facebook, etc. I actually shut everything down last night, including the tv, and picked up a book instead. This digital age can be distracting.

Without a doubt, television can be a time waster…I get intriqued by mindless entertainment that has no benefit in my life. An hour or two later, I wonder how I’ll accomplish the necessary tasks!

Yes, the internet can suck me in, also. But really I’m only reading what interestes, educates or connect me so I don’t consider it time wasted. This time must be mananged, though, or those necessary tasks will be ingnored!

For me it’s (I like that word :) ) and reading/absorbing information in general. I wouldn’t consider it wasting time, because I think it’s inspiring and educating most of the time, but since I still got so many other things to do, it sadly is. I try to look at it in a positive way, allowing myself just to “wander around” the internet for a limited amount of time (maybe 1-2 hours) AFTER I got stuff from my to-do-list done. This way I can enjoy it even more :)

Mine is email. I’ve signed up for too many newsletters, devotionals, etc., and feel guilty if I don’t read them all. I should unsubscribe from them and just check out their websites when I have time and want to, rather than feeling like I’m ignoring someone who’s knocking at the door all day.

Bloghopping and store wandering. I’m terrible about running in to pick up this one thing, then wandering in a daze. I usually have at least one kiddo with me, so that does limit things a bit. Have been trying to cut down on this by stopping off at other places to shop. If I only need milk, will just pick up a gallon at the gas station instead of wandering the big box. As far as bloghopping goes, I get distracted by all the fun links and end up ten pages from where I started. A timer is my friend!

Sounds like the internet is a common theme here! It actually makes me feel less guilty when I read that others are getting sucked into the same silly, time-wasters things I am. Just today, I was on a mission to find my son a fridge for his dorm room. Two hours later, I hadn’t found the fridge, but I’d checked out all my friends on Facebook, browsed around some non-appliance stores, tweeted a bit, and checked my email. I need to follow Pappelschnee’s advice and get my work done before allowing myself to get on the internet for a LIMITED amount of time. It’s what I’d tell my kids to do, why can’t I do it myself???

Facebook, definitely Facebook! I was checking it so much at one point, I installed an extension on Firefox to block me out of it during my working hours, ie. when DD is at school. As a writer, I figure I’m actually “researching” when blog hopping though it also takes a lot of my time.

A day later and I am thinking that all that “time wasting” is probably time my mother would have spent on the telephone and her mother would have spent at tea parties and maybe we just need down time – but in our hectic life we might “Allow” ourselves a bit of time-out, but never as much time as we need!!! When I am energized and good to go I would never linger at my computer but dash around doing stuff…

I think the biggest time waster for me is trying to do too many things at once and therefore, spending lots of time trying to remember where I was before I got derailed. It takes me all day to get one little task done because of interruptions from email, tweetdeck, chat programs, etc. While I’ve been really busy all day, the things that need be done just get started 30 times.

BLOGS FOR SURE. There’s so much information out there, and I love to see what everyone is talking about…
I only check my reader once or twice a day, but there are just so many that it usually takes an embarrassing amount of time just to skim—not even read/absorb them, let alone put my favorite posts into Evernote. My Mac is glued to my lap in the evenings after my littles are in bed…I think my husband is starting to resent the thing. ;-)

    Hi Mandi!

My time waster for the month (maybe for the year) has been Twitter. I get in there and I get lost talking to people, retweeting, and jumping around. I’m have Twitter ADHD.

The organized, productive side of me is working non-stop on solutions and tools to solve this issue. I think I’m about to have a breakthrough.

Until then, see you in Twitterdom. Loving blessings!
